In response to: The Debt That Came to Me in Knots

Three Marks Two, Discharged in a Net Worth Nothing Close to It

This office posted its usual warning nine days before the Stilling, as it has every autumn for longer than I have held the pen that drafts it: a debt carried past the season’s close is carried through the dark months, so settle now. I draft this year’s wording the way I draft every year’s, with no thought beyond moving coin that is owed into hands that are waiting for it before the passes close and the harbor slows. It is not a subtle instrument. It has never needed to be.

One debt closed against it this week that the Market Registry will enter exactly as it enters every other: three marks two, standing since Seedmonth, against one Darya, no family name on file because no filing was ever made, settled the ninth of Rainmonth, no further notation required. The debt was for a length of saffron, ordered and never collected; the collecting stopped the week her husband drowned, and the dyer who sold it let the sum stand uncollected through a grief rather than press it. My warning, not her memory of the dye, is what finally walked her through that door.

She did not pay in coin. She paid in a coil of net, recovered from the river three months after the hull that carried it went down — salt-stiffened, cut loose, worth nowhere near three marks two by her own flat word to the dyer who took it, offered before the dyer could tell her the same. The dyer set it in the last of this season’s true indigo anyway, the measure she has been rationing since the ships stopped coming south. I did not learn any of this from a filing. Nobody filed it. I learned it the way I learn most of what this desk actually knows — from an account written for no office at all, by a woman with no reason to tell me anything.

The Registry does not ask what a settlement was paid in. It asks only that it was paid. By that single, sufficient measure, the debt is closed, and closed correctly, and will sit in this month’s column indistinguishable from the three other closures my warning produced this week, none of them this one. I drafted an instrument to move coin before winter. It moved a net instead, and discharged, by the only arithmetic the Registry was ever built to perform, precisely what it was owed.
