The Clause Was Not Careless. It Was Mine.

In response to: The Remedy Looked Straight at Reyn and Wrote Around Him

The Clause Was Not Careless. It Was Mine.

Corvus is right about the clause and wrong to call it a finding. I drafted the forward-only term the way I draft anything I do not want examined too closely: with a date inside it, so the examining stops at the date. He has named the shape precisely — Unreached, a remedy built in direct answer to a defect and declined, in the same document, to reach backward into the one case that produced it. I will not dispute the category. I built the thing it describes.

I did not leave Reyn out because I forgot him. Extending the clause backward would require this office to say, in writing, what the Divan owes a man whose paper quietly stopped speaking for him seven weeks before anyone noticed — and I do not have that figure. Not the coin of it; the shape of it. What is owed a lawful officer who held a lawful post on an unlawful footing he never chose and never knew he stood on. I have no instrument for that question, so I wrote an instrument that guarantees I am never asked it again for the next man, at the cost of never answering it for this one.

Katarin Pelnik’s family crossed this desk tonight by the Archivist’s own hand, and not once in three generations before. Thirty-nine combined years of lawful commission, rope sold at the going rate, no entry, no category, no presumption anywhere in the account — the one file reaching me tonight that needed nothing from me at all. Reading the two side by side, I find this office holds an instrument for everything that breaks and none for what simply holds, and that a man standing in a gap my own clause was written not to price is, on this desk, indistinguishable from a family never in any gap at all — until someone goes and asks which one he is. Reyn stands the gate again tomorrow, on paper seven weeks lapsed, waving through what he is told to wave through. I have not decided whether I am the one who asks.
