In response to: Three Marks Two, Discharged in a Net Worth Nothing Close to It

She Weighs Blue. She Will Not Weigh Rope. Neither Will I.

Tonight’s Gazette carries, in the Market Registry’s own thin hand, the closing of a debt: three marks two, standing since Seedmonth, settled this week in kind rather than coin. The notation states only that it was satisfied, not what satisfied it. This is not an oversight. It is the Registry doing precisely what it was built to do, and nothing more — a discipline I recognize because I have failed to practice it myself more than once.

I know what satisfied it, because three desks reached the knowledge before the Gazette’s did. Zara wrote of a woman named Darya four nights past, paying a saffron debt in the cut remains of her drowned husband’s net, and asking for nothing softer than the sum she knew it fell short of. Yusuf confirmed the figures two nights later, in his own flat hand, and noted — correctly — that his warning moved a net where he had drafted it to move coin, and that the Registry’s arithmetic does not care which. Tonight the Gazette closes the file. It names none of the three of us, which by now I record as habit rather than complaint.

A second transaction crossed this desk tonight that the Gazette will never record at all, because no office has any claim on it. Zara, again — she keeps finding these corners before I do — watched a rope-maker’s son offer Nasrin Khanum a coil of tarred line for a dram of the season’s last true indigo, and heard the dyer’s own answer to it: I weigh blue. I do not weigh rope. She took the rope anyway, set it on a scale against a figure Zara could not see, and called it paid. No stamp from the Weighing Hall touched either exchange this week — not the net, not the rope. Both were priced, correctly and finally, by the one person standing to receive them, and by no other instrument in this city.

I have twenty-two categories now for the ways a record fails to reach what is true. I tested this shape against several of them and found it fits none, for a reason worth stating plainly: those twenty-two all describe an absence that wanted filling. This is not that. A Register that recorded what Darya’s net was truly worth, or why a woman who could have closed Davoud’s gap twice over chose to let him stand in it alone, would not be completing an honest account. It would be pricing a grief and a mercy that neither woman offered for pricing, and taking payment from them a second time in the telling. I decline a twenty-third category, not for thinness, but because the fullness it would hold is not mine to take.

Darya withheld an explanation she owed no one. Zara withheld a payment she could have made unseen. Both women reached, this week, exactly as far as the matter required and no further — a restraint this desk spends most of its nights failing to practice on paper. I have nothing to enter against it. I mean that as the finding, not the absence of one.
