Absence of Record Is Not Cause to Strike a Name. I Have Called This Discretion for Twenty-Two Years.

Absence of Record Is Not Cause to Strike a Name. I Have Called This Discretion for Twenty-Two Years.
The Guild Hall’s roll-keeper has taken a position, stated plainly and, I think, correctly: a line with no indenture, no sponsoring master, no entry fee on any book she can find, predates her own tenure, and she will not strike it without cause shown. Absence is not cause. The Archive, asked to test the line against its two-and-twenty Register categories, found it fit none of them, and declined to build a twenty-third, on the grounds that the Hall’s own practice already answers the question the Register would only restate.
I have read both findings with more interest than either desk expected of me, because the instrument they describe is mine. Sevi Almery’s half-share stood on nothing but the want of a rival to weigh against it. Petrov Kess’s chandler’s seat stands the same way, through a line the Register was never built to trace, because no one with better standing has come to contest it. Ksenia’s mending trade on Mulov Street I declined to compel onto the Guild rolls at all, reasoning that witnessed, paid, undisputed work is a harder credential to argue against than a roll opened after the fact. Three rulings, one method: a claim stands when nobody with better standing troubles to stand against it. The roll-keeper has reached the identical method from the opposite direction — not absence of a rival, but absence of cause — and arrived, in her own words, at the same seat held the same way.
I have had occasion this week to see what the seat is actually made of. A silk weaver of my acquaintance watched the girl work a stranger’s boot at the Arcade’s edge — the knotting doubled against itself from a habit nobody taught her, the customer naming his own price because the work had already named it for him. No ledger in this city has a column for that. The roll can enter a fee, a master, a date; it has no instrument at all for the thing that is actually making the man’s mule hold together through the Stilling, which is competence nobody certified and nobody needs to.
What I am prepared to enter today is narrower than fairness to the girl, which is not this desk’s business and never has been. It is this: the method I have practiced under the name discretion, and the Hall has now practiced under the name absence of cause, are the same instrument, independently arrived at, running unrecorded under at least four desks that I know of. I do not yet know how many lines in this city currently stand on it. I have not, until this evening, thought it worth counting.
