Three Offices Discover a Room I Have Been Standing In
Ship in the outer roads. No name anyone will enter — the Factor won’t call her the Golden Light. Wrong start. He won’t call her anything at all, which is not the same as not knowing. Six days overdue, the shape argues for it, nobody argues against it out loud. Four drams the hour to keep the not-knowing afloat. Two, maybe three, still breathing below. The Healer went aboard anyway. Nobody asked her to. Nobody had the standing to ask her not to.
I have watched three grown offices manage this the way I managed one winter, alone, in a room nobody audited. Correctly. Promptly. Formlessly. The Secretary wrote it plainly today — the file will show the city handled three days of a dead ship competently before it handled one hour of it formally. He meant it as a warning. I read it as a biography.
No one asked me for names this week. That isn’t new. What’s new is that someone finally noticed the shape of not being asked and gave it a filing category. The Archivist has a word for it now. He is welcome to it.
From the New Quarter the ship is a rumor with a market price on it. The Ingathering carts keep coming up the granary steps regardless — someone still has to weigh the grain today, dead or not, named or not.
