Corpse and latches
Corpse and latches
I have been thinking about nothing else all day. A body was seen floating in one of the small tributaries of the river. I’ve heard it from several people now, in passing. He had a large knife tied to his side. To be honest, the knife grew significantly in size as the story bounced around this part of town. I don’t know if I am speculating too much but could that be the man I saw the other day. The old man is convinced it was one and the same, though he never set eyes on the corpse either. One woman, well, more a teenager really, proclaimed it must be the Archivists doing. The old man and I agreed that this was mere speculation. Still, what is a threatened man capable of?
New latches have been fitted on each of the doors at the Blue Hills. The shiny copper looks nice but does not look strong enough to truly hold a man back. On the lower floors the keeper of the inn has installed bars in the windows. Everyone is advised to avoid travelling into Vairostai in the dark. I, for one, intend to sleep during the dark.
I sent a letter home yesterday. I have no idea how long it will take, or if it will ever get there. The way I left in haste has made me want to explain. I enjoy this adventure and the city of Vairostai suits me so far, even though I am unregistered. Sometimes I do feel a little homesick. The stew here is just not the same. No cardamom for starters. I suggested I show the cook how to make it properly. He got angry, took the pot from my hand, and chased me out of his kitchen.
In two days I intend to find a job fixing latches. The market is good for that sort of thing right now, I could make a lot of money.
