The Hull Returned. The Proof Did Not.
The Hull Returned. The Proof Did Not.
Fayyad —
A rowboat came in this morning with no one in her. Found broadside against the current off the eastern mole, oars shipped square across the thwarts, the way a careful hand leaves a boat it means to find again — or does not mean to need again at all. No name lettered on the hull. No mark on either blade. No household on the Wharfside or at the Harbor missing a man or a woman who went out on the water and has not come back. The Harbourmaster’s clerks have entered her to the Customs Shed, same column as the shoe and the Serevan chart two months back, pending a claimant who by every sign now standing will not arrive.
I have told you, across seventeen cities, that my proof is the return — departed and arrived, the ledger page closes when the ship comes back. I did not account, in thirty years of saying so, for a return that carries nothing. The boat came back. Whoever went out in her did not. The page closes and tells me less than it told me open.
Price the thing plainly, since neither of us trusts a sentence that doesn’t: a stripped hull her size, sound planking, no rot I could see from the quay, might clear two marks six at the Weighing Hall’s own auction once the term lapses. Pyotr would take the oars off her for a sliver each and call it fair, thole-pins being thole-pins. That is what she is worth to the city. What she cost the hand that left her, I have no column for, and have stopped pretending I will grow one by looking harder.
Serevan would have had her at auction inside the week — a harbor that size cannot afford to hold a mystery past market day. Kael Dorn’s House of Records would not have entered her at all; a boat with no name is not a fact there, only an absence nobody is paid to notice. Your own ledger, which reckons a man by what he moved this season and nothing else, has no entry for a man who moved nothing and left the moving behind him.
I keep thinking about the oars, stowed square. A man in a hurry does not stow his oars. A man doing something else entirely does.

P.S. — Cassia still climbing, eleven marks four, no cause recorded past the forty-fourth day. I notice I have started pricing it the way I am pricing the boat: correctly, and without believing the number explains a thing.
