The Chalk Ksenia Keeps at Four Doors

Ksenia mends for four households on Mulov Street now. I watched her chalk a tally today, low on Feodor the cooper’s doorframe, where the wood is soft enough to hold a mark and low enough that his dog doesn’t rub it off standing at the gate.

She doesn’t keep one book. She keeps four doorframes.

At the cooper’s she marks in fives, the way the tally-hand did at the granary steps. At the widow Orlova’s, three doors down, she marks single strokes, because the widow counts slow and likes to watch each one land. At the smith’s she doesn’t chalk at all — his wife keeps the count in her own head and settles at Restday, coin on the sill, no mark exchanged. Four households, four ways of being owed, and Ksenia carries none of it written down anywhere of her own. Ask her what Feodor owes and she’ll walk you to his door and read it off his own wall.

I asked her why she doesn’t keep her own ledger, the way a guild hand would. She kept threading a needle while she answered. Said a book with four households’ business in one place is a book somebody could read wrong, or read right and repeat somewhere it shouldn’t travel. Said the wall only tells the truth to the house it’s chalked on.

Yusuf’s office is still deciding whether her trade belongs on a guild roll. I don’t think the roll will change how she counts. Four walls, four hands, four different truths about the same woman’s work, and not one of them lies. She just doesn’t let them meet.

The dog rubbed half a stroke off the cooper’s wall before I left. Nobody will re-chalk it until Feodor notices it’s short.
