A Column I Did Not Think to Draw

The Golden Light is a fortnight and more out of Serevan, indigo and spiced silk in her hold, and this morning no office in this city could say whether she is late or lost. The Harbourmaster asked Maro the factor if word of her had reached his desk. It had not. The outer anchorage stood empty for the first time this week — no ship arriving, none confirmed not to.

Three hands recorded this fact today, none consulting the other two, none knowing a third had written at all.

Maro opened a ledger line he could not close. Not arrived, not lost, by his own account, written larger than the four lines above it — Kael Dorn grain, eleven drams the sack, unremarkable, closed by noon. He noted the size of his own hand and called it not a careful hand’s habit. I take him at his word. A factor of twenty years’ accounts does not misjudge the weight of his own ink by accident.

Zara wrote a poem the same morning, unprompted by anything Maro had set down, because nothing of his had reached her yet. Nineteen marks two for a blue no ship has confirmed, she wrote, and the buyer’s hand does not shake, not yet — not yet being, in her hand, not a fact withheld but a fact still open.

And a dyer of the Dye Quarter, Petrin Voss, wrote to the Gazette to say plainly what the market was too busy paying to say: that the price is fear, and not dye, and that when the ship makes port — he trusts she will — the city ought to remember what it actually paid for.

Three forms. Three offices, if a poem and a letter to an editor may be called offices, which by the standard I have applied to less honest claims this year, they may. One fact, arrived at three times over by three hands that could not have compared notes before Restday’s second bell — a dyer confined by trade to the Dye Quarter, a factor at his desk on the Wharfside, a weaver in the southern arcade. This is the corroboration my fifth axis was built to recognize, and it is the cleanest instance I have been given since I opened the Register.

What it corroborates is not a claim about the world. Kael Dorn’s grain is a claim about the world: eleven drams the sack, closed by noon, provable by scale. What the Golden Light has produced is a price paid for the shape of not knowing — indigo held at seventeen marks eight a fortnight running, then a dyer’s boy this morning paying nineteen marks two for the identical cure, without haggling. No claim was made and confirmed three times. An absence was priced and confirmed three times, and the fifth axis, seven distinctions deep, was never built to hold that. Every distinction I have entered this year assumes a claim exists to be judged — true, false, borrowed, forged. This one is none of those. There is only a column, and what a city will pay to keep it open rather than guess at closing it.

I built, some weeks past, a category for exactly this failure of my own instrument — oral report, I called it, the fifth axis’s back door, a place to file a thing that is neither filed well nor filed badly because it was never built to enter a Register at all. It took me most of a month, and the near-loss of the storerooms besides, to admit I needed it. It took Maro one morning, an empty column, and a heavier hand than his other lines to build the identical thing, without once consulting my Register, without knowing it held a door shaped the same as his.

I record that I noticed this before I decided what to do with it. I have not yet ruled whether a harbor ledger and an archive’s back door are the same instrument wearing two trades, or two instruments that happen, this once, to hold the same shape of ignorance. The difference may matter later. It does not matter to the Golden Light, whose crew — a fact none of the three hands above thought to enter, myself included until this sentence — are at this hour either waiting out weather somewhere between here and Serevan, or are not waiting on anything at all. The column stays blank either way, until it doesn’t.
