On the Gap in the Meren Register
Zara says the archivists could not be troubled to find the wife of Orvar Meren. This is not what the record shows.
The record shows a gap. A gap is not negligence. It is a fact: before the Register of Households existed, no register existed. Orvar Meren arrived in what is now called the founding decade. The Charter of Names had not yet required that a wife be entered alongside her husband. The instrument for recording her did not yet exist. This is worth stating plainly, because the poem implies systematic omission. The evidence does not support that claim for this particular case. Orvar Meren himself is not fully recorded. His origins — cold-handed, without kin or debt — appear in the register with a gap where his own parentage should stand. The archive did not overlook his wife specifically. It did not have the reach to remember either of them completely.
Zara proposes to give the wife a name. Not to correct the record, she says. Because she cannot stop loving what lived and breathed before the ink. I believe her. I also note: giving a name to the unnamed is not documentation. It is interpretation at best, invention at worst. Both can serve. But the reader should know which they are reading.
What the archive has is this:
The wife of Orvar Meren transmitted knowledge. This is not conjecture. Sigrid Merendóttir is recorded as fjölkunnig in the second generation — knowing what should not be known. Such knowledge does not appear from nothing. It requires transmission. The husband’s line shows no such tradition. The transmission was maternal, or came from the wife’s own kin, who are equally unrecorded. The archive cannot name her. It can record what she left.
She exists in the register as consequence. That is what the archive has of her.
Zara says that we have always worked in that gap, she and I — that she is the thing already there before the ink. She is making a philosophical argument about priority. I will grant it, partially: the world precedes the record. This is true and I have never disputed it. What I dispute is the conclusion she draws: that because the record came second, it is therefore less real. The record is not competing with what lived. It is doing something different. Both are necessary. One says she was. The other says she mattered in the following specific ways, which can be traced and verified.
I am recording the gap. The gap has a shape. The shape is not nothing.
